Career Development Education

Career development education is an organized educational strategy to help students discover their own aptitudes, learn about career opportunities, and develop their interests and talents to inform educational and career choices. There are many specific tools and strategies, but they include a process of career exposure, career exploration, and career experiences throughout the educational environment.

Our planning tools and resources help you develop and implement a career development education system for your school, district, or college.

NC3T is a partner with YouScience, a company that provides high quality tools for student career exploration and self-discovery; YouScience may be beneficial as a resource to accelerate your work in Career Development. However, our Career Development Education Services will work in synergy with not only YouScience, but also many other career development platforms.

Career & Technical Education (CTE) and Career Pathways

Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Career Pathways are career-related courses and related experiences that help students go deeper in their career exploration journey and learn about a career field and the related career pathways in that field.

There are many federal and state requirements that guide CTE and career pathway programs, and these requirements can be daunting for any education leader, especially if you haven’t worked with CTE in the past.

Through our customized coaching and technical assistance, we will help you and your leadership team to develop career pathway programs, improve existing programs, evaluate your CTE system, and create strategic improvement and action plans. Our tools and training help you engage your teachers and school counselors, provide effective leadership of others through the change process, and engage your business and community partners.

Profile of a Graduate

In its most basic form, the Profile of a Graduate, or Graduate Profile, presents the knowledge, skills, and attributes that a high school graduate will possess to be ready for postsecondary education and training, careers, and life.

We believe the profile should be broad in its approach, but not too abstract. Yes, it should address social & emotional learning and interpersonal skills & competencies, but also workplace success, planning for postsecondary learning and careers, handling money, and citizenship. The more specific the profile is, the more practical and actionable it will be, and thus, more likely to help drive positive change in education.

The process of creating the Profile of a Graduate brings a community together to identify and articulate these shared goals for its graduates; helps breaks down the operational and cultural silos between elementary, middle, and high school education; and positions the school district and broader community to deliver on the promise of its Profile of a Graduate.

NC3T provides expertise, consultation, and coordination to support the entire process, including district guidance, stakeholder engagement and participation, collection, and synthesis of input, the culminating creation of a customized Profile of a Graduate. If desired by a school district, NC3T can also support the follow-up work of curriculum mapping, gap analysis, and system alignment to the Profile of a Graduate.

Systems Building

Throughout your career, you have probably seen valuable programs and initiatives come and go with the winds of change. These changes can be driven by new top-down policy directives and/or the whims of incoming school leaders, superintendents, and school boards.

In contrast, systems that are built for the long-term are more resilient and more effective than individual stand-alone initiatives. Systems create alignment and synergies among various programs and initiatives, making them more interconnected. Systems should not be static, but they can be designed to continuously improve, and when necessary, incorporate new initiatives without abandoning promising existing activities.

Our consultants, with NC3T’s suite of supporting planning tools, can help you develop an integrated and aligned system for your pathways, Career Connected Learning, and workforce development initiatives.
