Career development education is an organized educational strategy to help students discover their own aptitudes, learn about career opportunities, and develop their interests and talents to inform educational and career choices. There are many specific tools and strategies, but they include a process of career exposure, career exploration, and career experiences throughout the educational environment

Our planning tools and resources help you develop and implement a career development education system for your school, district, or college.

A closely related set of activities is called Work-based Learning. Because Work-based Learning depends largely on the involvement of business and industry partners, you can learn more about our support for Work-based Learning here.

Helping School Counselors Understand Career Development and CTE

Many school counselors spend so much time addressing academic counseling and the social-emotional needs of students that they have little experience providing Career Development or helping students select the best-fit Career and Technical Education/Pathways courses. NC3T provides workshops and coaching to counselors to help them quickly gain confidence in these concepts.
