Working with the District of Columbia Public School Office of Teaching and Learning (DCPS), MCG led an effort to identify and provide all 30 DCPS career technical education (CTE) programs with a succinct and clearly stated set of program standards and curriculum resources. Specifically, this interactive process involved drafting of CTE program standards consisting of competencies (knowledge and skill statements) related to each of the 30 Programs of Study offered throughout DCPS.
These standards also include Applied Literacy and Numeracy skills, as well as a common set of 21st Century Employability Skills such as problem solving, innovation, and teamwork. MCG also developed necessary curriculum resources including a curriculum framework and program guide template, to guide the implementation process.
Once developed and finalized, on behalf of DCPS, MCG hosted a professional development day for all DCPS CTE teachers to introduce the new CTE program standards and curriculum resources. Teachers received one-on-one training about how to implement and use the new standards in the classroom.
Ultimately, this project aimed to provide DCPS with sets of CTE standards and curriculum resources, aligned to the expectations of college readiness and business and industry standards that will improve the consistency and quality of instruction in each of DCPS’s CTE programs. MCG conducted these activities from April 2011 through September 2011.
